Visiting Brussels for a few days ? if you are and do like Fish & chips , there is place that you should not miss. Fish & chips can be pretty boring but this place is special in many ways. I have been living in Brussels for a little over a year and I still have places to try but this small cosy little restaurant may be the best Fish & Chips in downtown Brussels.
The name Bia Mara apparently means seafood in Irish. ( The owner is irish). Ironically this Fish restaurant address is 41 Rue du marché aux Poulets, which translates into English as Street of the Chicken Market !! The place is located in a pedestrian street just a few blocks away from Brussels “Grand Place”. The staff there is very young & very international (everyone working there appears to be in their twenties and coming from all over Europe). I have been to this place a dozen times now and I always found the staff to be very friendly & efficient.
The menu is a short one and only about Fish & Seafood. There is only ONE chicken option (maybe they felt obligated because of the address). The interior is small seating around 40 people max ( there is a small terrace for when weather allows it). Dishes usually come with some very good thick-cut fries. On each of my visits I was impressed that the food feels very tasty and fresh. Most of the dishes in the menu are around 12 Euros (about 15 USD, and prices in Belgium include service charge) which make it an amazing “value for the money” option. To drink, a few options of wine by the glass (red or white), water and , of course being in Brussels , some local beer. I cannot comment on this last one since I do not drink beer but wine by the glass is very cheap and yet quite decent.
The place is open both for lunch and dinner ( it is closed in the afternoon between 2.30pm and 5.30pm) and also work for take-out. I highly recommend it.
