Exhibit in Brussels starts tomorrow

7 December 2015 by Harold Glit

A quick note to say that I am working on several reviews which I expect to post sometime next week. I am currently reviewing a new line of camera bags. This week I should be silent as I am busy working on my coming exhibit which starts tomorrow in Brussels at the “Espace Bog-Art”.

One more special deal for m4/3rds users

3 December 2015 by Harold Glit

To follow-up on my post from monday, here is another deal that just appeared and is difficult to ignore if you own a m4/3rd camera (olympus or Panasonic) and likes to travel light.

The Olympus zuiko 4-5.6 40-150mm is now available for only $99 in silver (here) or in black. I happen to own that lens ( got it several years ago) and  can say that this offers a very good balance between focal range, weight and image quality. Of course it is not on par with the newly released Olympus Zuiko 2.8/ 40-150mm but we are obviously talking about two different lenses in terms of weight and price since the pro version with its constant aperture sells for $1,429 !!

If you do not have a long tele lens this is a good bargain even if you only have use for such focal length once in a while.
I will be posting this month my top 10 lens recommendation for m4/3rd lenses fit for  people wanting to travel light.

Looking for the real Thanksgiving deals ?

30 November 2015 by Harold Glit

With the Thanksgiving week end and the coming holidays , there are apparently many deals to be had. For the person trying to invest in a somewhat “serious camera” it is easy to get confused . But not all deals shown on the rumors sites are worth plunging for.
As a blog supported by links, it is tempting to post every link you can find on the net but it is also not a service to you the reader.
If you already own lots of equipment the holidays deals may be for you the opportunity to save a few bucks on a lens or camera body you have been coveting for a while but if you are relatively new to the “small but serious camera market” all of these deals left and right might be overwhelming

To say that I have been underwhelmed by the products recently introduced by the biggest brands (Nikon, Canon and… to a lesser extent Sony & Leica) would be an understatement.
I will soon publish an article on a kind of “state of the union” for each brand but for the moment I would like to put the emphasis on the non-dslr system which, in my opinion, has really shown the most significant product evolution in 2015 : The micro 4/3rds system. [Read more…]

No more Vapor in the sky !

30 October 2015 by Harold Glit

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Dear fellow traveler
Just an update to inform smoking travelers (I am not one of them) : This has been rumored for quite some time  but it is now Official : It is now forbidden to check-in  electronic cigarettes or any other vapor device in your check-in luggage. There has been some incidents proving that such vapor devices can  be hazardous in the  check-in luggage compartment.
You can still bring an e-cigarette as a carry-on although you cannot, of course, vape on the plane.
Since we are on the subject on forbidden items to check-in when traveling by plane, I would like to take this opportunity to remind fellow photographers that batteries also can only be carried-on and not checked-in, not that it would be a good idea anyway to leave extra batteries in your checked luggage. Technically there are in some countries some limits on how many  batteries you can carry with you but in all my worldwide travels I have never had an instance when this was checked

The best travel duffel bags

19 October 2015 by Harold Glit

The main goal of this blog is to help its readers to travel smart and to travel light. In my opinion, which pieces of luggage you use speaks volume about how smart of a traveler you are. Simply put, each traveler should have at least one collapsable duffel in its luggage collection.
Most travelers own a cabin-sized regular trolley on wheels. This might be a very good choice for those traveling on a formal business trip when the luggage path is going to be mostly smooth like airports terminals and hotels corridors. If, however, you are traveling on  less predictable paths, wheeled luggage are not necessarily your best choice (far from it). When your trip involves going up and down steps (think  subway in Paris) walking on cobbled streets or making your way through a crowded market, you are likely to be better off with something you can carry alternatively on your side by the handles, on or over your shoulder or on your back. In all of these instances, a collapsible duffle bag should be part of your traveling arsenal because it adds three advantages  : small size and weight when empty, various carrying options, and versatility of fitting in lots of tight spaces while providing ample storage.
